The Tigers recorded the first shutout of two-time defending state champion Buford since 1999 in a 14-0 win in the marquee matchup in the state Friday night. While freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson was having his coming out party for Gainesville, senior all-state linebacker A.J. Johnson had a few surprises of his own Friday night against White County. Senior quarterback Shunquez Stephens accounted for 300 yards of offense and threw three touchdown passes to lead West Hall to a 24-13 win over Chestatee Friday night at War Eagle Stadium. East Hall built a 21-7 halftime lead and then held on down the stretch to beat cross-town rival Johnson Friday night. Commerce is averaging 21 points in the second half in 2010. The problem is that the Tigers have yet to score a point in the first half in the first two games of the season. Lakeview Academy did everything but score Friday night as the Lions fell 13-0 to Kings Ridge Christian. Mill Creek scored 21 fourth quarter points to blow open a close game en route to a 31-12 win over Alpharetta Friday night. Cedar Shoals held Habersham Central to just 94 total yards in taking an 18-3 win Friday night in Region 8-AAAA action. West Hall dropped a pair of tough matches to Buford and Jefferson Thursday in girls volleyball action. Flowery Branch swept a pair of matches in girls volleyball action Thursday at the Flowery Branch gym, including one in thrilling fashion. Class AA No.3-ranked North Oconee held Jefferson to just two hits in taking a 10-1, five-inning win over the Lady Dragons Thursday in an early battle for first place Region 8B-AA. Both Johnson cross country teams had strong showings Thursday at a five-team meet at Banks County High School. The North Hall girls volleyball team split a pair of matches Thursday at home. The Flowery Branch volleyball team split a pair of matches Tuesday at home. Jefferson won a pair of Region 8N-AA/A matches on the road Tuesday at the Lakeview Academy gym.
