TMC takes Gospel to Iraq
By Ken Stanford Staff
CLEVELAND - Dr. Ed Pruitt, and four Truett-McConnell College students - Matt Caporale, Billy Fortenberry, David Foster, and Kevin Sims - recently returned home from a trip to Iraq. The team was challenged a month earlier to take the Gospel to Iraq while the door is open and the people are receptive.
The five answered the call and departed the U.S. November 17, sacrificing Thanksgiving with their families in order to preach the Gospel.
Dr. Pruitt and the team say they knew from the moment the challenge was offered that it was the will of God and thus the answer was an immediate "yes."
The TMC missions team's assignment was to openly share the Good news of Christ. The Gospel was openly presented in public markets, university cafés, public parks, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and pool halls. The people's receptivity to the Gospel was truly amazing. On more than one occasion, team members would be on the street with an open Bible sharing Christ while military police walked by, glanced over to see what was taking place, then kept walking.
There were dozens of encounters where the Gospel was shared and the people listened intently and asked serious questions considering the claims of Jesus. Many of them were non-believers.
Additionally, the TMC team also met with a handful of believers. One of them, according to the team, who has been persecuted by his wife and family, wept as different team members read from the Psalms.
But, Dr. Pruitt downplays the group's sacrifices.
"Yes, we willingly gave up Thanksgiving at home to take the Gospel to the nations, but the real heroes are the believers living on the front lines daily standing firmly on the Word of God."
Meanwhile, Truett-McConnell has been asked to return to Iraq next year, and plans are underway for just that.
